Landmarks45.org was created to promote the recognition of the forty-fifth anniversary of the signing of New York City’s landmarks law on April 19, 1965. We encourage you to share
your memories in the comments and contribute to the wiki, but if you’d like, you can simply check out the blog or calendar of events.
This site is a project of the New York Preservation Archive Project, in partnership with the Neighborhood Preservation Center, the Historic Districts Council, and the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.
At its heart, historic preservation is a grassroots, community movement. Community action is what got the Landmarks Law passed, and community involvement is what continues to drive landmark designations. Similarly, community involvement is the only way to thoroughly document – and celebrate! – the history of the preservation movement.
Without your input, the story of the city’s preservation movement will be lost – or even worse, misunderstood. By sharing your experiences, you help ensure that the history of the preservation movement is shaped by the people who lived it.
